Port Fairy SLSC News #4 2011/12

December 20th 2011

Port Fairy Surf Club Nippers took part in the local carnival held at Warrnambool last Saturday and enjoyed both the fine conditions and the competition with their peers from Port Campbell and Warrnambool. The emphasis at these local comps is on fun and friendly competition with conditions not as stringent as they are at the bigger carnivals. Nevertheless it was a good opportunity for all participants to test themselves against some new opposition prior to the regional carnival to be held at Apollo Bay on January 4th – by the way anyone wishing to compete in this carnival should let the club know as soon as possible.

Many of the Nippers backed up after Saturday and attended our usual session on Sunday morning at East Beach, in conditions that were at times, shall we say, somewhat trying! The sea was rough, the rain came down and the wind howled - but that didn’t stop us from having a great time. Often in these conditions the warmest place to be is in the water and out of the wind - although Simeon’s BBQ was probably even more popular on Sunday! Nippers has a short break now thanks to both Xmas day and New Years Day falling on Sundays but returns on Tuesday January 3rd for our extended Summer Season. Thanks again to all the age group managers, water safety personnel, and parents that have assisted with the program so far this season.

With thanks to the generous support of sponsors Port Fairy IGA and Sungold Milk, new Nippers rash tops in the Port Fairy colours of purple and gold have arrived at the club and are now available for purchase.  We also have a range of other gear on sale including the ever popular club hoodies which are an ideal way to keep warm when the wind whips in off the ocean. Please contact the club or drop in on the weekends and talk to the volunteer patrols if you’re interested in any club merchandise – perfect for that last minute Christmas gift!

Another generous donation, this time from the Port Fairy/Belfast Lions Club, has resulted in the arrival at the club of a brand new Dolphin competition board from Dolphin Surfcraft in Queensland. The board, which is valued at $2300.00, will be used by the youth development squad and any senior members competing for the club at carnival level. The club is very grateful to the Lions club for their ongoing support.

Tickets are now on sale for the famous Duck Derby, paddled every New Years Day on the Moyne River, and you can get yours from the club or outside the Port Fairy IGA at selected times. The Port Fairy leg of the 2012 Shipwreck Coast Swim series will be held at East Beach on January 2nd from 11:00am.

The club would also like to pass on our condolences to club stalwart Martina Murrihy and her extended family following the passing of her father Terry Dwyer.
