Rowers win gold medal

Three Port Fairy surfboat crews dominated their age divisions at last Saturday's Victorian Masters Championships at Lorne.

The Firebirds women's crew took gold in a nail-biting finish against Lakes Entrance.

Both teams were on equal points after two events and a "row-off" was required to separate them to decide gold.

This has been a five-year challenge. The team consists of original members Leonie Boyd, Tania Dalton, Nicole Dwyer and Ilona Plant in her first season and ably swept by Greg Dalton. The result produced tears of joy.

The Shearwaters Dean Dwyer, Scott Hetherington, Shaun Murrihy, Howard Sharp and sweep Paul Buchanan, also won gold convincingly in the 180 years combined age section.

They rowed superbly and were rewarded for their diligence, commitment and many hours in the boat.
Both teams are now in training for the Australian titles.

The Fossils took home the silver medal in the 200 years combined age group.

An impressive achievement as this team line-up has only been together one season.

Congratulations to club stalwarts Greg Dalton, Peter Hill, Les Lynch and new recruit Bob Beekhof. Paul Buchanan also swept this team and both men's teams really benefited from his experience and skill.

There are more Victorian competitions before the Shearwaters and Firebirds compete in Queensland in April at the national competition.

No doubt, we will continue to see them out on the water determined to do their best.
