Fight for the World Title

THE Port Fairy colours are proudly going into battle this week at the World Surf Life Saving Titles at Christies Beach in South Australia.

The Port Fairy Surf Life Saving Club has single and team entries representing it at the titles, which began last week and will conclude on Sunday.

Port Fairy’s Mark Plant competed in a number of individual events and won a bronze medal in the masters ski event last Friday.

Teenager Jake Hetherington has taken part in a number of under 18s events. Today three surf boat crews from Port Fairy hit the water with the Fossils in the men’s 200+ years age group, the Shearwaters in the men’s 180+ and the Firebirds in the women’s 160+ category.

It will be the second major competition this year for the Shearwaters, who competed in the Australian Titles in Queensland in March with their strong efforts good enough to put them in the final.

Shearwaters team member Paul Buchanan said all the teams and individual competitors from Port Fairy had trained hard in the lead-up to the titles.

“Training has been happening for a couple of months now and we are all pretty pumped about doing the best we can,” Buchanan said.

“We are expecting good results, there is no reason to think otherwise because we have prepared as best we could.

“Christies Beach is very similar to Port Fairy so we don’t expect huge surf so the conditions will be in our favour.” Buchanan said competing in surf carnivals was not for the faint hearted but he said a good technique and team spirit were the key ingredients to success.

“We are all focused on keeping fit and strong and the camaraderie you get from tackling the seas together makes it very enjoyable,” he said.

In a busy couple of months, the club will host the Navy Series Surf Boat Carnival on Saturday, December 8, with the carnival featuring teams from across Victoria.
